The beginning and development of the crisis
Mobilization and initial assistance in the early days of the war were crucial for people fleeing the conflict. People from Romania and the Republic of Moldova gathered at the Siret border, providing food, hot drinks, and transport services. However, the lack of initial concrete involvement from the authorities was felt by both volunteers and refugees, who often had to rely on their own resources. Eventually, material, physical, and emotional resources run out.
Civil society, volunteers, and various associations and foundations, such as the "Road to Life" association, provided considerable support to the refugees. However, after a year of war, individual donations decreased. Donation and distribution centers in different cities began to close, and after two years of war, the "Drumul Vieții" association and a few others remained the main sources of support for refugees in Transylvania, particularly in Oradea and the neighboring counties.
Challenge
While the urgent need for food and clothing has been met for a large proportion of the refugees, they continue to face challenges two years later. The language barrier makes it difficult to access various services. Refugees struggle to access health services due to a lack of information, and the situation is similar in the field of education. Without language skills, many are forced to work in fields where they have no training, which may not be suitable for them, but they accept these jobs to survive on a minimum wage in a foreign country.
Considering the long-term impact, integration into society and ensuring access to basic services are key challenges. There are also concerns about the impact on the Romanian economy and social systems. According to various sources, Romania is currently hosting more than 86,000 refugees from Ukraine, mostly women and children.
How Your Donation Helps
Children Education
We uphold education as a transformative force. This project is dedicated to offering educational resources and support to the children of displaced Ukrainians. We aim to keep studies in Ukrainian to preserve their cultural roots, while also facilitating their integration into Romanian society in case of a longer term stay.
The Church
Spirituality often serves as a source of comfort and strength in challenging times. The Church aims to cultivate a supportive and nurturing spiritual community for displaced Ukrainians, offering a place of solace, faith, and fellowship.
